NGO questions arrest of 5 youths who put up posters

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malay rights NGO Jaringan Melayu Malaysia has called the arrest and charging of five youths for posting allegedly derogatory posters as unfair.

Insisting that the youths were doing “social work” in creating awareness regarding the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual) issue, movement president Azwanddin Hamzah charged the police of double standards when arresting those who had put up the posters.

“There are posters all over the country by loan sharks and illegal massage parlours.

“I think that is a lot worse than just a bunch of youths trying to create public awareness of the threat of LGBT and free sex,” he said in a press conference here on Thursday.

With that, he announced that JMM would be defending the five men - who were present at the function Thursday - and provide them with legal service.

The five men aged between 24 and 36 years old were charged in the magistrates court last week for putting up posters in Jalan Wan Kadir, Taman Tun Dr Ismail at 3.40am in February.

It was previously reported that the posters were discovered by TTDI residents and contained pictures of Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk S. Ambiga, Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng and national laureate A. Samad Said.
